What is diabetic retinopathy?
There are no early symptoms of diabetic retinopathy, which means it is vital that regular eye examinations are done for early detection and treatment. Hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) from diabetes causes the capillaries in the retina to narrow, which subsequently results in poor nutrition and blood supply to the retinal cells. This destroys the retinal cells and as new blood vessels form, bleeding occurs which then leads to edema, then finally vision loss.
